WCARES meets monthly for formal training sessions and weekly on amateur radio to test the operating condition of member radio stations.
Our readiness to respond to an agency’s request for support depends on each member’s capability to operate portable or mobile and deploy rapidly when requested. We practice using portable radio equipment using portable emergency power for extended deployments.
We use several modes of radio communication including Morse code, voice transmissions, digital messaging over amateur digital frequencies, amateur radio email service, and portable local area internet networks linked regionally using Starlink. Our members are volunteers and do not charge for their services or for the use of our stations. To become an ARES member the only qualifications are to have a valid amateur radio license and the willingness to serve as a volunteer if asked.
